It’s a big-time buyers market out there.
So what makes someone choose one house over another?
The floor plan?
The school district?
The neighborhood?
My guess would be one of the above.
But our buyer Kristi, a divorced Mom with a 3 year old had different priorities.
Hailing originally from Wisconsin,
She walked into our “Garden Gate” living room (green),
Which was right off of our “Golden Fleece” dining room (yellow),
And one thing came to mind…
The Green Bay Packers!
She felt home, she told us.
Our color scheme sealed the deal.
Unbelievable!
The Pack is back?
Hell I don’t know.
They’re off to an ugly 0 and 2 start this season.
But they’ve also got a couple of new fans cheering them on down in KC.
Go Green Bay.

Going, Going, Gone…
Early risers were treated to a light show on Downtown Indy streets this morning.
Street lights rapidly flashed on and off causing a strobe light effect.
Apparently it was quite a show and the locals were perplexed as to what was going on.
Officials blame it on a “malfunctioning relay” but I know the real scoop!
It was a Celebration.
Indianapolis was bidding us adieu.
We got a call late last night with an offer on the house.
The first and only one in 6 months.
As we say in my old business…
The first bid’s the best bid, hit it!
The buyers are pre-approved and have already sold their home,
So it looks pretty promising that this could be the real deal.
Never the less, I’ll be down on my knees today praying to Saint Joseph, the Patron Saint of real estate matters and home sales.
We buried a statue of St Joseph when we first listed the house back in February.
It has to be done in a specific way.
Bury the statue upside down, head downward, facing east, in the hole and cover it over.
Then you recite the “Prayer to Saint Joseph for Selling a House” every night.
We did “most” nights...
maybe that’s why it took so long.
Never underestimate the power of a Patron Saint!

Extra cops flood Indianapolis state fair
RICK CALLAHAN
Associated Press
INDIANAPOLIS - Police boosted security in and around the state fairgrounds to help ensure that the Indiana State Fair isn't marred by the sort of violence that's left 13 people in the city dead in recent days.
Well this little tidbit of news isn’t going to help dump that house.
13 people dead.
That’s a lot.
That would be a lot in New York City or L.A.
But Indy?
Maybe it’s time Mike and I face up to the fact that we own a “Vacation Home” in Indiana.
Lucky for you, we’re generous people.
Take it, it’s yours.
Stay a week, stay a month.
Whatever.
We’ll leave the key under the mat.
Just remember to duck and weave while you’re there.
And for added security…
Stay away from the State Fair.

So Long Indy…
We’re leaving you on a high note.
Mike took Nicky and I to the Indy 500 on Sunday.
It was everything I ever heard it was and probably even more.
I had trepidations about going.
It’s hot, it’s loud, it’s long, I don’t do public bathrooms and I hate to sweat.
I’m sure Mike was thrilled to have me as his date!
Nick was coming off of a violent stomach virus and we were none too sure he could go the distance.
But we both persevered!
Not knowing what the parking situation would be,
Mike drove us within a few blocks of the racetrack.
We parked in an elementary school for 20 bucks which was going directly to the PTO for the kids.
We were barely out of the parking lot when a young entrepreneur came by on a 4-wheeler with a makeshift flatbed trailer behind it offering us a ride to the entry gate for a mere tip.
Deal…on we climbed for what turned out to be one hell of a ride!
Fans along the way were high-fiving and raising their ice cold beers to us.
People were cheering for the kid and his entrepreneurial spirit.
I was happy for the lift on this hot and sunny day,
As for Nick…hell, this might as well have been the oval racetrack itself, it couldn’t possibly get any better than this!
And then it did.
Right before we started to ascend the grandstands to our seats, past Indy pace cars were parading celebrities at different stages of their careers around the oval track.
20 feet away from us was “Hurley” from “Lost”, the TV show.
Nick is a huge “Lost” fan and is particularly crazy about Hurley.
The kid was vibrating!
Next up was Gene Simmons from the band Kiss.
I swear our eyes met just as he stuck out his world famous tongue with the seemingly jointed curl at the end and I was the one vibrating.
Sad but true.
Next up was Pat O’Brien from “The Insider”…
Admittedly an anti-climactic moment for both Nick and myself!
What an odd threesome at a cocktail party I thought.
We climbed to our seats which were right past turn 4 and so we could see all of turn 3 and the straightaway to the start/finish line.
They were high enough up that the noise wasn’t too bad and the view spectacular.
We were welcomed by the “locals” with incredible enthusiasm.
Most of these people had been sitting in their same seats for the last 20 years.
One kid, Jessie was celebrating his 30th birthday by sharing his ice cold beers and passing around his beer bong.
Mike and I showed rare restraint.
Jesse told us that his Dad, who was sitting a few seats down from him, has been to every race since the early 60’s only missing 1969 when he was fighting in Nam.
That’s quite a legacy.
The common denominator with most everyone we befriended was family.
The Indianapolis 500 is a family tradition starting with the racers themselves.
Marco Andretti and his father Michael finished 2nd and 3rd in one of the most exciting finishes in Indy history.
San Hornish Jr. propelled passed Marco and beat him to the checkered flag by .0635 seconds.
That’s 12 inches over a course of 500 miles, truly and incredible ending even for a non-race fan.
I guess it’s only fitting that we leave this town on race weekend.
We happened to move here last June, the same weekend that NASCAR’s Brickyard 400 was taking place.
And now we buckle up for our own 500 mile race…
Indianapolis to Overland Park.
Racing around the oval track I’m sure is a rush.
But man…I’m looking forward to the straightaway we call I-70.
The one that’s taking us home.

Boo-siers!!!
These Hoosiers are very serious about their basketball here.
They have more intensity in their pinky finger than I do in my whole body.
I found myself questioning my own sanity as I drove 45 minutes one way through near blizzard conditions to watch Jordan’s team lose (again).
But even more so I wondered if I could be arrested for child endangerment for allowing her to go on the same roads in the same conditions on a school bus without seatbelts!
The game should have been called off.
But not here in Hoosierville…basketball is in their blood.
Now I grew up watching KU …Roy Williams style.
I’m no stranger to Hoops, I can holler with the best of them.
But these guys here are mean; they will single out an opposing player and just torment her.
I’m talking about the parents here, not the players.
I was mortified to be sitting in the same section as some of them.
It’s Junior High School basketball folks…
In the wise words of Rodney King…
“Can’t we all just get along?”

The Crossroads of America
That’s the “other” nickname for the Hoosier State.
Apparently more Interstate Highways cross through this state than any other.
It ought to however, be called “The Skull and Crossbones of America.”
Every time I get on the highway here I risk my life.
I had a doctor’s appointment today…. (Yes, I did get my Ambien back!)
But by the time I made the 30 minute trip there and back again I think I was nearly run off the road 3 times by some dumbass trucker.
Ever notice the “look” they give you after they’ve nearly killed you.
One perv actually had his digital camera out and snapped my picture!
No worries…I gave him a good shot!
Oh well…at least I’ll sleep well tonight.
Nighty, night!

The Indy Monster
“Mom, come quick” Nick yelled the other day.
“Arghhhhh.”
I was in the middle of doing my hair which is as rare as a Peace Treaty in the Middle East.
“What do you need?” I screamed back. (You’d think we live in a Palace.)
“I think I see a Monster in the pond! One like Nelly, come quick!”
By now the curling iron was so entangled in my hair, I had to unplug it and take it with me down the hall at a pace this body has not hit since I used to ding-dong-digit.
“Here I am, show me” I said, feigning enthusiasm (and gasping for air).
“You missed it. It had a big long tail on it with no hair.”
“Must have been a beaver” I suggested.
“Nope, it was way bigger than a beaver” Nick insisted.
And the thing is, he said it with such authority… that now when I’m home alone dinking around the house, I can’t help but keep one eye on that pond.
After all… I hear Nelly’s still on the loose!

Indy-annoying

As hard as I try to like it here,
This place just begs to be made fun of.
Today’s case in point…
I saw not one, but two motorcycle cops.
Now that alone would be funny,
It was after all only 22 degrees here today.
But add to these cycles a sidecar,
And I split a gut!
When was the last time you actually saw a sidecar?
For me, it had to be in a Monty Python movie.
In fact, I think it was a cops and robber scene!
But in defense of the rest of India-no-place …
There was no passenger Cop riding in it.
Must have been a slow crime day.
Vroom, vroom!

A Very Dark Day
What makes someone take their own life?
Hopefully, most of us will never have to think too deeply about that.
But today…my family does.
The man across the street took his life this morning.
There are all sorts of gruesome and gossipy details I could share.
But none of those matter.
David Voght is dead.
Left behind are three beautiful children and his wife Anne.
Aubrey, Jordie’s best friend, is in 6th grade, Alex an 8th grader looks just like his Dad, and little Emily…a first grader is full of spirit, smiles and hugs.
I’d watch Dave walk Emily to the bus each morning, showering her with kisses before she’d board.
How could someone knowingly leave that behind?
We went to St. Francis-Clare Catholic Church and lit candles for them.
We prayed that God welcome Dave into his Heavenly Kingdom and forgive all his sins.
We prayed that he reach down and offer the family comfort and healing.
And we cried.
Hug your kids tonight, call your folks.
And if you are feeling lonely and hopeless…
Please, reach out to someone.
You are not alone.
Chris

Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is…Part 2
I was chatting with my buddy Jeff in Dallas earlier today.
Reminiscing about the vacation our families took together last summer to Texas Hill Country, and looking forward to next June when we’ll meet there again.
We were also commenting on what a lazy day we were both having and our thoughts turned to cocktails.
I told him it was only 12:30 here and that Bailey’s would be the logical choice.
“Well it’s 12:30 here so I’m having a beer” Jeff said.
“No, it’s 12:30 here…Eastern Time”, I insisted.
Suddenly, I didn’t remember changing my watch after figuring out the whole time change debacle last month.
That must be it, my bad; it was actually 1:30 here in Indy.
A couple of hours later, I asked Jordie to run the Netflix movie out to the mailbox.
“It’s 3:30 though” I told her, glancing at my watch. “We may have missed the mailman”.
“No Mom…it’s only 2:30” she said.
Holy Crap...Not this again!!! (Click here for Original Rant)
I set my watch back to 2:30 and poured myself a drink.
And it wasn't Bailey's!
Addendum: Jeff called me last night, (12/13)..Apparently he knew it was only 11:30 in Dallas and was screwing with me. Asshole!!! cb

We’re Not in Kansas Anymore
I’ve lived in Kansas since 1971.
I know tornados.
I’ve spent many a night in a dark, musty basement with my Dad and two sisters.
Mom would never come down if it was in the middle of the night.
“When it’s your time, it’s your time” she’d tell us unwilling to leave her warm, cozy bed.
But never have I been un-nerved like the past 2 weeks here in Indy.
Shit is flying all over the place.
These storms are fierce.
If this keeps up…it really will be India-NO-place!
But the scariest part of all?
“I’m” in charge!
Me…the one who sleeps with Prince Valium.
No Ambien…no sleep.
So being the responsible parent that I am…
I’ve gone two nights without sleep.
With Mike still down in Kentucky (enduring his own tornadic hell)
I must be the one to listen for sirens in the night.
And pray they don’t sound.
Why?
Because I’m tired.
I’m cranky.
And finally…I have officially become my Mother.
I’ll be taking my Ambien tonight…
"When it’s your time…it’s your time."
Good night Toto.

Welcome to Hoosier-Ville

I blew it.
I should have gone to Testostorama.
I chose Martini’s instead…Damnit!
I have one lousy friend here in Indy...Josie.
(She’s not lousy; far from it…she’s a hoot. The fact I have “one” friend is lousy!)
Josie, among other things, owns a bike shop with her family.
They had a booth set up at Testostorama and Josie worked it last night.
She wasn’t thrilled about it, but she knew she’d probably see some shit that defies logic…
at least ours.
Boy Howdy!
Just as I was salivating over the first sip of my “Bonefish Martini”, my cell rang.
It was Josie.
Her booth it turns out was right next to the “Midget Wrestling Arena”.
We roared…it just couldn’t get any better than that.
And then it did.
Josie called back to tell me about the “Pre-Wrestling” foreplay going on.
Apparently…strippers in G-Strings Strutting-for-Dollars have nothing on the Mini’s.
Midgets were encouraging Testostorama patrons to staple dollar bills to their anatomy giving new meaning to “The Buck Stops Here”.
I have the pictures as proof…but even this blog has “some” standards!
Josie also got to watch with amusement as an over-served woman climbed fully clothed into a vendor’s Hot Tub.
That alone would have been worth the price of admission.
No one told me they were selling beer there!
Everything I said in my last Musing about Indy (the city) was true.
But what I realize now is this:
Here…Culture is a destination.
You’ve got to want it, seek it out.
But Redneck…that’s a way of life.

Testostorama
Admittedly, I haven’t had too much good to say about my new digs.
I will however, go on record right now and say…
“Indianapolis is a great city”.
Mike and I take the kids downtown every chance we get.
It’s hip, it’s clean, it has a great vibe.
First class restaurants, Big League sports,
Peyton Manning and an undefeated football team.
Yay for Indy.
The city offers culture.
It has an awesome zoo, the best Children’s Museum in the Country.
The Eiteljorg Museum is second to none for American Indian Exhibits and Western Art.
It has the Symphony, the Opera, Comedy clubs, Blues and Jazz.
The city rocks.
So…just when I’m warming up to my new home,
“Testostorama” comes to town: Men’s Expo 2005.
Y-chromosomes will rule the city.
Think “Redneck”!
Jessica Canseco (October issue of Playboy) will be struttin her stuff.
Billiards player Jeanette “The Black Widow” Lee will sign autographs.
There will be Midget Wrestling featuring Verne “Mini-Me” Troyer.
And tons of booths selling loud things that go fast and talking animal heads to hang on your wall.
I seriously considered coughing up the 8 bucks entrance fee.
It would certainly have supplied me with “Musing” material for months.
In the end though, Mike and I took the money to McCormick & Schmicks.
We spent it on Martini’s.
Rednecks are amusing,
But Top Shelf booze in a sophisticated setting…
Priceless.

This "Time" Next Year...
The saga continues.
This in today’s Op-Ed column in the Indy Star:
Current time zone fury is much ado about nothing
Indiana’s time zone status can’t be any more confusing than it is now, (Thank you Ms. Neal) so it’s hard to understand the frenzy being whipped up over the latest U.S. Department of Transportation proposal.
The state’s move to daylight-savings time next year (Huh???) has prompted a review of time zone boundaries with more than a dozen counties asking the federal government to transfer them into the Central zone.
So if I’m following this correctly, and believe me, I’d rather work an algebra problem than this, next year I “am” going to Spring Forward and Fall Back.
Does this mean India-No-Place will no longer be standing still? The only good thing I could think of to come from actually standing still was that when the world comes to its ugly end, Indiana will get another 20 years until they catch up. Now they’ve even screwed that up.

Does anyone really know what DAY it is?
I do, I do…pick me!
It’s Sunday, October 30th, the day BEFORE Halloween.
Halloween is tomorrow …Trick or Treating is tomorrow night!
Not here in India-No-Place.
I just found out that the city of Greenwood, (mine), has declared tonight as the night for Trick or Treating.
Say it with me folks…Huh???
I have never been too enamored with rules, there are just too many of them. But this place has NONE. It does whatever it friggin wants. (Refer to rant on Daylight Savings Time) Mayhem I tell you.
Some things in life are sacred. A Martini shaken, not stirred. Reading the Sunday paper ON Sunday morning. Colored lights on the Christmas Tree and yes…trick or treating on Halloween night!
“Ding-Dong”…there’s one of the calendar-challenged little shits now…he’d better not show his Darth Vader ass back up here tomorrow night, that’s all I’ve got to say about it.
Boo (hoo!)

Does anyone REALLY know what time it is???
Does anybody really care? (Chicago III, 1971)
Well I do Damnit!!!
You would too if you didn’t know what time it was!
Do I sound pissed? Do I sound confused? I AM!
A little background first. Most of you know that Mike and I moved to Indianapolis with the kids in August. (Well, Mike moved to Kentucky but let’s not get into all that here!)
I distinctly remember the move. Mike had the kids, two dogs and a U-haul. The Moving-Gods were smiling down on me that day…I was alone in the Landcruiser, rockin-out to 70’s music all the way. My only responsibility that day was to “beat” the movers to the new house. Their “ETA”; (trying to impress my Military family) was 3p.m. That fact alone is why I am so adamant that I “do” know what time it is. I kept checking the clock. It was 2p.m. when I arrived. It was 4p.m. when Mike got here with the gang. It was 9p.m. when I fell into bed and 9a.m. when I got up the next morning. My point here is that it was still Central Time.
Recent headlines in the Indy Star: “Indy considering switch to Central Time Zone”
HUH???
As is my nature…I let this go the first time I heard it. They must be smoking something…we ARE on Central Time. A few days go by.
Lead-off story on the Eleven O’clock News, (that should have been a hint, why does the news come on so late here?) “Some Indy Counties to vote for time zone change”
HUH???
Alright…now I spring into action, (note to self: Do Not Fall Back). I look at the clock on the microwave; it is 10:25a.m. The coffee pot? 10:25a.m. The computer will know, yep…10:25a.m. I’m not crazy, it’s still Central Time. I know without a shadow of a doubt that I never changed the big hand on my Cartier watch!
If you could step into my challenged brain for a short time, you would comprehend the HELL that I’ve been through; back and forth, back and forth between “knowing without a doubt” what time it is, and complete and utter self doubt!
News Flash: “Johnson County (mine) votes to follow Marion County’s lead and stay on Eastern Time Zone”
HUH??? WTF!!!
Now I’m pissed, dazed and confused. What the hell time is it?
Every phone call is now my secret path back to sanity. Mom in Kansas calls, “Hey Mom…fine, fine, everything’s good, yeah, hey…what time is it there?”
Hello Dad? (New York)…just checking in, how goes things? Good, good, yeah everything is fine here…say, what time is it there?
Every chance I had, I worked the time of day into the conversation, and guess what? I was right every single time! What are those KOOKS on the news talking about? If we’re on Eastern Time, like they keep insisting we are, then why aren’t I late for every friggin thing I do? Why are the kids not late for school? Why I ask …why?
I figured it out today, Yay for me. Indianapolis is indeed on Eastern Standard Time. But here’s the hitch; they don’t “participate” in Daylight Savings Time”.
HUH???
“Participate?” We can choose to “participate” in Daylight Savings Time? WTF!!! Where am I, how did I get here and when do I get to go home?!? Holy Crap.
I guess the point to my rant is this…come Sunday…don’t call me after 8p.m. unless you live (and know that you live) in the Eastern Time Zone. Apparently it’s going to be 9p.m. here (then), 8p.m. by you if you live in Central, assuming you “know” what time zone you live in. So when you and the rest of the country “fall back” Sunday morning, I won’t be. I’ll be going to bed in India-No-Place, praying that when I wake up Monday morning, the kids will get to school on time and all will be right with the world.
Now if I can only figure out what time Grey’s Anatomy will be on…
Well I do Damnit!!!
