Gobsmacked!

There are certain words I occasionally come across that demand I add to my vocabular repertoire. The challenge quickly becomes to work them into conversation that day. As soon as possible in fact, one might even consider me obsessed.

Sometimes it’s not just a word, but more of an expression; “wicked” comes to mind. My friend Karen Haaaa-pa, (Harper to most of us), from New England always tickled me with that expression. Coming from her mouth, one that can rival even mine… it never got old. When Karen said something was wicked funny or wicked scary, the intensity of her story intensified! Lots of people say things are awesome; for me that word has long ago lost its awesomeness. Wicked still gets my attention.

Case in point… I recently blogged about the word “verbose”. I don’t use it much, but I love knowing it’s in my arsenal. Sometimes my heart skips a beat when I think I actually made a word up. “Vocabular” is an adjective which means “of or relating to words or phraseology”. Who knew? I do now as my skipping heart sinks! Dang it…

Today’s new addition is “Gobsmacked”. Twice I tell you I read it. It’s said to be of Irish origin (gob means mouth), and is used to describe the feeling when your gob drops open in response to an astonishing event rendering you speechless. “Chin hit the floor” is the term I “used” to use.

It is obvious by those who know me best, that I am quite uncomfortable with awkward silence. More often than not, I fill the void nervously with my own senseless chatter. Well no more folks, from here on out, I am going to thoroughly enjoy my Gobsmacked moments.

Yep…
Listen, cringe perhaps, and then enjoy!
